Safety Surfacing

Safety Surfacing

Colorful play structures, climbers, and swings may get most of the attention when designing a playground, but it is just as important to consider what safety surfacing should be selected for the playground in order to prevent injuries and provide parents with peace of mind.

Lea Park & Play is committed to providing both a fun and a safe play experience for children, and a key element in a safe playground is the surface material, which is used. 60% of all playground injuries are due to falls, so clearly a safe and forgiving surface is of critical importance. A number of excellent alternatives are available, among them engineered wood fiber, rubber mulch, poured in place rubber, rubber tiles, and synthetic turf. We carry products from the leaders in the industry, including Little Tikes Commercial, Fibar, DuraPlay, and PlaySafer.

Each choice has its advantages, and we can help you to determine which is the best option for your playground. Wood fiber is all-natural, affordable choice which drains quickly. Rubber mulch is easy to install and virtually maintenance-free. Poured in place rubber surfaces allow for seamless designs in a variety of colors. Rubber tiles provide a durable and functional addition to any playground. Synthetic turf provides a natural grass-like appearance with none of the associated maintenance.

All of these surfaces are available in varying degrees of thickness, which provide increasing levels of protection against falls. To determine the thickness required for your playground, the “fall height” must be determined by using the tallest piece of playground equipment as a benchmark.

When planning your playground, don’t forget to look down – what you’re standing on plays a key role in determining how safe your playground will be.
